The Martins have Landed

Our Bermuda Experience
"As the ferry drew near, hoards of people on deck squeezed up to the rail and pulled out their camcorders. Just seconds before the cresting bow wave upset our peaceful afternoon, I turned us perpendicular to the wake to take it square on the stern. The wave approached, people on deck shouted joyously, the captain of the ferry gave a toot on the horn, then all at once the wave was under us and we shot off--surfing the face of it at top speed."

Reefing Systems
"My advice to novice sailors has always been to practice reefing the sails on a calm day. This will allow everyone to become familiar with the various steps, without being distracted by the disorienting affects of flogging sail cloth. There's something about a crashing and bashing sail that effectively simulates panic and pandemonium. Take it slow at first, and get a feel for what is SUPPOSED to be the end result. During a genuine sail-reefing procedure - with gusty wind - lines will foul themselves by magic and spray will get blown in your face. A pitching foredeck will make it next to impossible to hold on - let alone get the reefing job accomplished."

Charter Report about the New Moorings 4500
"We had come to evaluate the new Moorings 4500 luxury cruising catamaran (Robertson & Caine Leopard 45) and compare it to a Moorings 3700 (Jeanneau Lagoon 37). It was an assignment filled with peril and hardship. Would we run out of ice? Would the queen-size berths be too big for comfort? Would we be so busy snorkeling that we wouldn't have time to read? The answer to these and other questions would be waiting for us when we sailed the Robertson & Caine for a week, then switched to the Jeanneau Lagoon and picked up a new crew for the second week."

Anchors chains and windlasses
"Picture this scenario: It is 2 a.m. and you are awakened from a deep sleep to the sound of the chain in the bow roller and the feel of the boat pitching into a wind driven chop. The wind has changed, and you know instantly that your stern is now close to the low reef you had anchored behind. On deck, you survey the situation. The reef is only 20 feet astern so if you drag, you will be on it in a flash. Across the bay there is a cove that offers protection from the wind and chop. What to do? Move, of course. On goes the engine and with the push of a button on the remote you haul in the anchor. Twenty minutes later you are in the cove, see that the depth is right for anchoring and with the push of a button you let go the anchor and reset it snuggly in the sandy bottom. As you slip back into you bunk next to your sleeping spouse, you once again say thank you to the mighty windlass on the bow. "

How to Rig a Day Sailer for a Spinnaker (PDF)
"There are many ways of rigging the spinnaker, and if you have someone in your local fleet that is already rigged, you may want to go and see how they did it. What I’m providing is a basic set-up, using simple and relatively inexpensive blocks and cleats. You’ll be able to use this plan on every model (Cape Cod, Sunfish Laser, O’day, etc.) of Day Sailer with the exception of stowage, which varies. With your boat rigged like this, you’ll be able to launch your spinnaker successfully. "

Solar Panels - are they for you?
"We decided to get a solar panel, but, at the start, we knew very little about solar panels.   We had a vague idea of how they worked - you know, the sun shines on the panel and it puts out electricity to charge the batteries - sounds great.   After doing a little research, we found there are several different types and sizes.   Which type was best for our application?   We also had to decide where and how to mount the panel.   Do we need a regulator?   Its not difficult, but there are several things one needs to consider before running out to the nearest marine store and plopping down cash for a solar panel."
