An unsailboat for unsailors
"The Dashews - designers and builders of the Deerfoot, Sundeer and Beowulf series of short-handed passagemaking sailboats - just aren't comfortable trying to handle that much sail anymore, he says. But they still want to cruise to places where they have never been and where the seas get pretty rough: Tierra del Fuego, Alaska, and maybe Scandinavia or Greenland. "We're just not going to do that in a sailboat at this point in our lives," he says. So they are powering up. The Dashews and their design crew have spent 7,000 hours designing and engineering an 83-foot power cruiser - an "unsailboat," as they call it - which is fast, comfortable, and optimized for cruising in the high latitudes where the weather is extreme. Dashew says the aluminum-hulled FPB (fast patrol boat) will be maneuverable in very stormy seas, resistant to knockdowns, and self-righting. "

Bright ideas for brightwork
"As a member of an antique and classic boat club and owner of a 1938 Chris-Craft Deluxe Utility, I see a lot of bright work. Some of the best work I've seen is on Charles M. Royce's collection of five classic wooden boats, among them the 35-foot 1939 Herreshoff tender Corsair. The person responsible for everything from maintaining the bright work to running these classics is Kirk Reynolds of Westerly, R.I. Staining and varnishing is a task many boat owners face, whether an annual touch-up, a small repair, or a complete refinishing or restoration. Reynolds' techniques, as described here, will get you started on the right course to a quality finish. "

Offshore and safe
"While there is no substitute for seamanship, no level of skill will compensate for a boat that lacks essential equipment. The good news is that the list isn't unreasonable; it is all useful (or will be in the event of an emergency) and your boat will be safer and more efficient if it is properly outfitted. That will allow you to rack up the miles and sea time that are the only way to improve your seamanship aboard a vessel you have confidence in."

History of the Flicka
"The origins of the Flicka go back over 100 years to the work boats which sailed out of Wickford, Jamestown, Point Judith and Newport, Rhode Island. These working boats evolved to meet the needs of the fisherman who sailed out to Block Island Sound to work the fishery. These work boats had a reputation for being fast, seaworthy and bringing their crews back to port safely. This is no easy task considering the weather these fishermen faced when they were days at sea. Block Island Sound, except for the summer, can go from a calm to a raging gale in a matter of minutes. The origin of the present day Flicka goes back to the 1950's, when Bingham discovered two derelict wooden sailboats on a river just south of Wickford, Rhode Island. He did some quick sketches and walked off their rough dimensions."

My Way Is The Highway
"Trailer-Sailing seems to be on the rise and with good reason too. For many, high slip and yard fees have become prohibitive, or at the least a financial strain. The trailer-boat, on the other hand, may reside at home for free, which also makes it more available for spur of the moment maintenance projects, or maybe just to admire and lift spirits on a bad-hair day. Not to mention, pocket-cruisers require less crew and are easier to handle for we of the aging baby-boomer population. All this, in addition to it's magic-carpet portability makes trailering a booming sailing option."

The Importance of Galleys
"As a kitchen is to a house, the galley is to a boat; it is the center of the sailing lifestyle. We need to eat, our lives revolve around feeding schedules, and whether we are harbor, island, or ocean-hopping, the kerosene, alcohol or gas stoves and ovens are essential to our happiness. When you compare the history of mankind to the history of cruising—a way of life that pretty much started with Joshua Slocum barely over 100 years ago—the modern sailor is still in an embryonic phase. While electronic and mechanical progress may advance at light speed, and sailing may become unrecognizably high-tech and automated, one thing I know for sure is that the galley will always rule the nautical roost."

Toolbox Lessons
"Suddenly, a new sound pierced the monotony. The hissing, blowing, and splashing of something big had the cat and me out in the cockpit in seconds. There it was, our first pod of about 10 truly gigantic whales, surfacing and sounding its way across our bow. Awed by the tremendous bulk of my fellow mammals, I stared for a minute until the thought that each one outweighed my 26-foot boat by several thousand pounds sent me right to the starter button. The engine rattled to life and I grabbed the tiller to steer a wide berth around the stragglers, simultaneously thrilled and wary of the unexpected company."

North Channel Cruising
"I sailed the distance to Harbor Island for the first ight's anchorage and encountered a gorgeous home-built trimiran that belongs to friends of mine. They sailed circles around me and we, in tandem, sailed to the anchorage in increasingly lighter airs. They put the tri on the beach and so did I, except I dropped my stern anchor on the way in. The bottom configuration allows for the rudder tilted up and motor down to be clear of the sands. I ran an anchor ashore and considered myself home for the night in the protected cove of the larger bay of the east anchorage. Harbor Island is a bit like a horseshoe in shape with two protected bays, the east one more protected."
