FurledSails   Weekly sailing podcast focusing on cruising and recreational sailing.

Odor Control
"Today she smells as fresh as a spring thunderstorm. What did I do? Like most complex problems the solution consisted of many individual elements, each of which contributed to a sweet-smelling boat. In this article, I’ll cover some of those elements that I used. They may not all apply to your situation but, hopefully, you’ll find something useful."

Organizing the Boat
"Start filling your binder by locating all the information you currently have about your boat. Brochures, bills, instruction manuals, installation diagrams should all go in there. Put receipts in one of the vinyl pouches. Most boat stores have a liberal return policy – as long as you have a receipt."

Costa Rica Anchorages
"Basically, there are two ways to enter the estuary. One is to head directly for a white sea buoy that lies approximately half a mile off the spit point. Upon reaching the buoy, turn and head into the estuary, keeping close to the Puntarenas side. Keep a very close eye on the depth sounder. Enter on a rising tide if possible, so that if you do touch bottom there will still be water to float you off as the tide rises."

Dinghy sailing
"There has always been a need for small tender boats as transport to and from moored sailing ships. Together with other smaller work craft such as fishing and light cargo, small inshore craft have always been in evidence. Charles II of England had a private sailing boat presented to him when he returned from exile to England in the 17th century, and he sailed for recreation and competition."

Varnishing Woes
"Since there is one possible solution to both problems, I’ll cover both questions at once. There is a school of thought that considers varnished wood to be the best looking protection for wood aboard boats. Others use a variety of teak and wood coatings: Cetol, Armada, and teak oils are common material. These products all require attention and recoating on a regular basis."

Cruising with Catullus
"Cruising with Catullus" is a sailing memoir, but it's also the record of a literary career and several unusual friendships. It was written as a prosimetrum, with a related poem heading each chapter of narrative. Some of the poems have appeared in literary periodicals, which are acknowledged where appropriate."

One of the Many Joys of Cruising
"For me, the best aspect of cruising is exploring new places on land as well as on the water.  I relish the prospect of fresh adventure around the next bend.  What crosses my path can range from the mundane to the extraordinary and richly rewarding.  One thing is certain: I will never experience the full range of possibilities out there unless I occasionally get off the boat, get away from the waterfront, and venture inland."

What I Needed to Know I Learned from My Boat
"First, a confession: I have adopted many of these strategies more by accident than design. For the better part of two decades, I have lived aboard small sailboats—the largest a 43-foot ketch and the smallest my current 30-foot home—and have pursued what is known as the “cruising” lifestyle—kind of like RV-ing, except on the water. "
