FurledSails   Weekly sailing podcast focusing on cruising and recreational sailing.

Alberg 35 and Alberg 37
"The late Carl Alberg designed the 35 as a coastal cruiser. With LOA of 34’9" she has a short waterline of 24’0" and moderate beam of 9’8" good proportions for slipping along in light air. The waterline lengthens when the hull heels, and the boat foots nicely in a breeze. Draft of 5’2" permits gunkholing in the Bahamas. Displacement of 13,000 pounds, heavy by today’s standards, provides good motion at sea and the ability to carry a modern cruiser’s payload. "

Looking for the Dreamboat
"After months of searching, of cursory examinations and in some cases, re-examinations, of learning where we both were willing to compromise, of engaging our hearts as well as our heads, we found a boat. Now Sandy’s attention to detail is significant because they’re our details. When I climb down the companionway steps, I am embraced by light and warm tones of wood and feel welcome in the space. "

Escape Dinghy
"These boats are innovative and unintimidating; designed to bring people into sailing easily. If you already know how to sail, it’s straight to the fun. Escapes make great performance dinghies to launch when you reach a new anchorage and want to stretch your big-boat cruising legs. "

Hunter Passage 450
"The design objective was to create a self-sufficient, seagoing cruiser with plenty of roominess and amenity, a boat easy to handle and safe for a family or crew to run around on underway. Enhanced volume decreed higher freeboard and a center cockpit. Ondeck safety spawned the structural arch - a place to locate both mainsheet and boom up and away from vulnerable crew, and a natural spot for dividends such as stereo speakers, instrument read-outs and Bimini support."

Saving Everest Horizontal
"Everest Horizontal was out there, some 110 miles north of Bermuda, crippled, perhaps dying, and I couldn't let that happen. She'd carried me around the world in the Around Alone race, pounded through storms in the Atlantic, surfed at 28 knots through the Southern Ocean, beaten her way upwind along the coast of South America, helped me survive catastrophes that would've killed another boat. So the day after I set foot on shore again, the rescue effort was under way."

Shoal-Draft Swinger
"Northshore Yachts, builder of the Southerly 135 Series Three, calls this boat "a variable-draft bluewater cruiser with a raised-deck saloon," and that just about says it all. This innovative Rob Hum-phreys design is representative of a line of swing-keelers that Northshore Yachts has been building for over two decades. "

Higher Stakes in the Cuba Game
"In plain English, it’s not illegal for U.S. citizens to visit Cuba, but it is illegal for U.S. citizens to spend any amount of money there, in any currency. Shortly after Castro took power in 1959, the United States implemented a set of regulations designed to financially strangle the regime."

Meet the Guru of Sailing Systems
"Nigel Calder is a well-known onboard-systems specialist, marine author and cruising family man. We visited him at his Maine home to find out how he balances his business with time for cruising"
