FurledSails   Weekly sailing podcast focusing on cruising and recreational sailing.

The Incredible Shrinking VHF
"The new handheld VHF radios pack far more punch, versatility, and communications features than did their predecessors. This product review first appeared in the October 2001 issue of Cruising World. "

Coaxing the Beast into Its Lair
"Few engine installations go strictly as planned, but with smart engine selection and a little foresight, you can sidestep any unpleasant surprises. Half measures intended to save time and money will likely do neither in the long run. "

Maximize Your Person Power
"ot so long ago, cruisers relied almost entirely on muscle to provide the power they needed to sail their boats. Tackles, a few small winches, and perhaps a manual windlass were all that most voyagers fitted. Today, more cost-effective means of power generation have led more cruisers to adopt electric or hydraulic power systems to do the heavy lifting. We take a different approach. "

Heavy Metal (Part 2)
"Attention to detail pays off for those working on the hardware that connects the reverse gear to the propeller. This drive train endures considerable wear and tear. Small things like a few too many thousandths of an inch misalignment can cause real trouble. Good engineering practice counts. Here’s how to make sure all the bases have been covered. "

Work Smarter, Not Harder
"Our maintenance challenges aren’t simply a function of Morgan’s Cloud’s size. Most voyaging sailors, on both small and large boats, say their preliminary time and money estimates for maintenance were way too low, often by 100 percent or more. It’s no wonder that seasoned voyagers say, "Cruising is working on your boat in exotic places." "

The Clean-Bottom Connection
"Of course, if you wind up needing bottom paint in a Venezuelan fishing village, your choices are fairly limited. Back in the States, we’ve got the opposite problem: a mind-numbing array of choices. A waltz through the antifouling-paint aisle at a major marine retailer these days requires some fancy footwork—slime-blockers to port, modified epoxies to starboard. Ablative copolymers and kinder, gentler water-thinned types round out the broad selection. "

A Second Wind for Circe III
"During the three and a half years that followed, Susan proved to be just as skilled at rebuilding Circe III as she had been at tearing her apart. With guidance from local professionals, she and David turned a bare hull into one of Biscayne Bay’s finest custom-fitted cruising boats. Susan carried out the bulk of the work, which involved everything from tabbing in new bulkheads to laminating knees and crossbeams."

Upon This Bank and Shoal of Time
"With a bit of planning, careening a sailboat on a sand flat can provide a cost-efficient and convenient way to add bottom paint and execute minor repairs in harbors where haulout facilities aren’t available. So for cruisers contemplating exploring off the beaten track, knowing how to safely careen a boat is a valuable skill. Some boats are more suitable for careening than others, and if the procedure isn’t done properly, it can lead to more serious challenges than painting the bottom. "
