FurledSails   Weekly sailing podcast focusing on cruising and recreational sailing.

Make Way for the Swedes
"If youíre hunting for a cruising sailboat that wonít limit your horizons, youíd do well to drop in on Orust. The largest island on the western coast of Sweden, Orust covers a mere 45 square miles and has only about 16,000 residents. Yet the island produces more than 50 percent of Swedenís sailboat exports; roughly half of the islandís tradesmen build sailboats. In other words, sailboats are serious business on Orust. "

The Stuff of Sweet Dreams
"The 426 is the latest product of Sabreís collaboration with Jim Taylor Yacht Design, a winning combination thatís yielded a stable of thoroughbreds: the 1994 Sabre 36, the 1997 Sabre 402, and the 1999 Sabre 452. Among this yearís fleet of new models in our Boat of the Year contest, the Sabre 426 stood out in a category of luxury midsize boats as the most exciting performer. "

Three Claims on Innovation
"Unsinkability has never been real high on my list," said Boat of the Year judge Skip Moyer. "But, then again, to people who sink, itís a big deal. A life raft is $4,000, and Iíd sure as hell rather spend four hours, three days, or a week in that baby with three feet of water in the bilge than I would sitting in a life raft."

Gallic and Dependable
"Recognizable by their distinctive blue sheer stripe, the boats produced by Chantiers Wauquiez, founded in 1965 and since 1997 part of the Beneteau Group, are highly regarded both for their sailing performance and for the quality of their construction. "

Dehler Delivers
"The Dehlerís moderately light displacement is achieved using a carefully crafted balsa-core sandwich structure for both the hull and deck elements. A thorough look at the glasswork attests to the hand-layup skills of the crew that built the boat. It meets European Union Category A offshore specifications. The hull/deck joint is actually secured with FRP laminate while both parts are still in the mold, creating a rugged monocoque structure."

In the Lap of a Luxury Cat
"The Lagoon 570 is the latest from the French builder that in 1984 formed as an offshoot of Jeanneauís racing division. Although some boats in its line were built at TPI Inc. in Rhode Island during the early 1990s, Lagoon has been an all-French affair since 1995, when Groupe Beneteau took over Jeanneau and its holdings. "

A Stellar Mix of Old and New
"The raised-saloon version of the Stellar 52 includes design work by Sparkman & Stephens as well as input from West Coast cruising-design guru Bob Perry. The attributes of such a pedigree have made the boat a head-turner at boat shows and the deck-saloon-category winner in this yearís CW Boat of the Year contest. "

A Racer for the Rest of Us
"The result is an action-oriented 32-footer thatís all sailboat, rather than a surrogate beach house, and an excellent value in performance and structure. The C&C 99 is built with technology thatís a notch above standard industry practice. I sailed the boat last fall with Tim Jackett, her designer, and it was instantly clear to me how his hands-on involvement with the project turned a good idea into a great sailboat. "
