FurledSails   Weekly sailing podcast focusing on cruising and recreational sailing.

From the New Spanish Armada
"The 50 is the most recent model to come to the States from the Barcelona-based North Wind yard, whose line of semicustom deck-saloon cruisers runs from 43 feet to 68 feet. Their Sparkman & Stephens-designed 43 won CW’s 2001 award for Best Deck-Saloon Cruiser. While North Wind’s building practices are fairly low-tech—the hulls and decks are hand-laid cored fiberglass, not resin-infused exotics—they’re implemented by a team of artisans who pay close attention to the details. "

Getting a Line on Cordage
"Nearly half a century down the line, the revolution in cordage technology continues to bring fiber products with greater strength and less stretch. None has durability to equal that of polyester under exposure to seawater and sunlight, but all have found a place, whether standing alone or blended with others, in the complex world of sailboat rigging. "

Where Tradition Meets Technology
"The Sun Odyssey 43 is designed with families and charter guests in mind. Its ingenious modular interior can be converted by the owner from two cabins to four; removable bulkheads in the forward and aft cabins fit into slots in the overhead. An L-shaped galley and U-shaped dinette, each to starboard, provide ample room for guests and those tending to them, as do two separate heads. Standing headroom in the cabin ranges from 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 11 inches. "

Ten Years After
"A decade ago last month, on November 25, 1992, a team of French navy divers dropped into a frigid North Atlantic to inspect the overturned hull of a 60-foot ocean racer called Coyote, sailed by a solo American sailor named Mike Plant. In mid-October of that year, he’d left New York bound for France and the start of the Vendée Globe singlehanded around-the-world race."

Tacking Away from Conventional Wisdom
"One of the most significant realizations I made during Leg One was that drastic measures would need to be employed to shake free of this windless weather system. I decided to take a risk and jibe to a heading that was actually west of north—in other words, sailing away from England—in an effort to break free."

Slow Boat Across France
"In this mode, slowing down from day to day and enjoying every minute of it, we came to various little places, and some of them remained in our minds. Le Somail, for instance, is a typical old village that owes its existence entirely to the canal. Located where the canal met traditional land-transport routes, the town probably began with an inn built in the 17th century."

Taking Tassie by Storm
"The warmth of the Tasmanian people and a gentle cruise of her coast are a welcome relief after Sunstone’s bash from Sydney in the Hobart Race"

Mom and Dad Deliver the World
"Presented with a unique opportunity and blessed with an adventurous family, a veteran of the solo-sailing wars turns a boat delivery into a 13,000-mile field trip "
