 The Big Payoff

"These fabled bays - Casco, Muscongus, Penobscot, Blue Hill, Frenchman -- are notched with magnificently protected coves, rivers, and fjords, surrounded by archipelagoes of granite-dumpling islands. It's large-sky country with lots of weather. At night the heavens spread wide, with the Milky Way a clear brushstroke of light. The air and sea proliferate with wildlife - eagles, osprey, deer, seals, dolphin, all kinds of birds, and several varieties of whale. As we approached the Isles of Shoals and crossed into Maine, a Right whale sounded in front of Ithaka, then swam alongside us. "Yo, Momma!" Douglas screamed. "It's the big payoff!""
