A San Blas Diary
"The islands of the eastern San Blas, sprinkled with tiny, primitive Kuna villages, are as beautiful as the islands to the west. The difference is that the Kunas here have less contact with the developed world. There's an innocense about them. One day ashore, we meet Horatio, who's probably 60, looks 75, taught himself English, and offers to take us hiking. We politely say we don't mind walking alone. "Sahila say no," Horatio insists, referring to the strict village chief who'd been upset when a German couple had once been spotted swimming nude. Horatio will make sure our clothes stay on. "
